Why Start the Tour from Banyuwangi?
Starting the Ijen Sukamade Bromo Tour from Banyuwangi is the most convenient option for travelers arriving from Bali or eastern Java. Banyuwangi is located on the eastern tip of Java Island and serves as the main gateway to Mount Ijen.
The city is easily accessible by ferry from Bali through Ketapang Ferry Port, making it a popular starting point for travelers who want to explore East Java after visiting Bali.
Beginning the tour from Banyuwangi offers several advantages. First, Mount Ijen is located very close to the city, which allows travelers to start the adventure immediately without long transfers. Second, the route from Banyuwangi to Sukamade and Mount Bromo follows a natural travel direction across East Java, making the journey more efficient.
Banyuwangi itself is becoming an increasingly popular tourism destination. The region offers beautiful beaches, national parks, and rich cultural traditions. Many travelers now consider Banyuwangi one of the most interesting emerging destinations in Indonesia.
Mount Ijen – The Famous Blue Fire Volcano
Mount Ijen is one of the most famous volcanoes in Indonesia and a highlight of any East Java volcano tour. Located near Banyuwangi, this active volcano is internationally known for its rare natural phenomenon called blue fire.
The blue fire occurs when sulfuric gases emerge from volcanic cracks and ignite upon contact with oxygen, producing glowing blue flames in the darkness. This unique phenomenon can only be seen in a few places around the world.
Visitors usually begin the trek to the crater in the early morning hours to witness the blue fire before sunrise. The hiking trail leads through a volcanic landscape before reaching the spectacular crater lake.
The Ijen crater lake is another incredible highlight. With its striking turquoise color, it is considered the largest acidic crater lake in the world. The view from the crater rim is breathtaking, especially as the first sunlight illuminates the surrounding volcanic cliffs.
Another powerful aspect of visiting Mount Ijen is observing the daily work of the sulfur miners. These miners descend into the crater to collect solid sulfur and carry heavy baskets back up the steep path. Their resilience and determination have become one of the most iconic scenes at the volcano.
Sukamade – A Remote Turtle Conservation Beach
After visiting Mount Ijen, the journey continues toward one of the most unique wildlife destinations in Indonesia: Sukamade Beach.
Located deep within Meru Betiri National Park, Sukamade is famous for its turtle conservation program and untouched natural environment. Reaching this remote beach is an adventure in itself, requiring travel through dense tropical rainforest and crossing several rivers using a 4WD vehicle.
The main highlight of Sukamade is the opportunity to witness sea turtles laying their eggs on the beach at night. Several species visit Sukamade regularly:
- Green turtle
- Olive ridley turtle
- Hawksbill turtle
- Leatherback turtle
Watching a turtle emerge from the ocean and slowly crawl onto the beach to lay eggs is a rare and unforgettable experience. Conservation rangers carefully protect the turtles and their nests to ensure the survival of future generations.
In the morning, visitors may also have the chance to participate in releasing baby turtles into the ocean, supporting conservation efforts.
Mount Bromo – The Most Iconic Sunrise in Indonesia
The final highlight of the tour is the legendary Mount Bromo. Located inside Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, Mount Bromo is one of the most photographed volcanoes in Indonesia.
The most famous experience at Mount Bromo is watching the sunrise from the viewpoint. As the sky gradually changes colors, the silhouettes of Mount Bromo and surrounding volcanoes emerge.
Visitors can also explore:
- The active Bromo crater
- The vast Sea of Sand
- The green Savannah Hills
- The Whispering Sands
A Perfect Combination of Volcanoes, Wildlife, and Nature
This tour combines a rare variety of experiences: volcanic landscapes, rare natural phenomena, tropical rainforest, wildlife conservation, remote beaches, and iconic sunrise viewpoints.
